Την Τρίτη 8 Μαΐου 2018, στις 11.00 το πρωί, θα πραγματοποιηθεί τελετή για την επέτειο της μάχης της Καλαμάτας, η οποία διεξήχθη στις 28 Απριλίου 1941.
Την τελετή για την 77η επέτειο διοργανώνουν από κοινού ο Δήμος Καλαμάτας και η Αδελφότης Απομάχων της Ελληνικής Εκστρατείας 1940- 1941.
Η τελετή θα διεξαχθεί στο Μνημείο των πεσόντων Συμμάχων (Βρετανών, Αυστραλών, Νεοζηλανδών, Κυπρίων και Ελλήνων) κατά τη Μάχη της Καλαμάτας, το οποίο βρίσκεται στο Δημοτικό Πάρκο Σιδηροδρόμων (Κρήτης και Ψαρών).
27 APRIL 1941 GREECEHitler’s divisions are advancing and Athens has fallen. The battle for the Corinth Canal is over. 50,000 allies including, Anzacs arrive in Kalamata. All waiting to embark, when the Germans arrive. The Battle of Kalamata begins.The rag-tag allied units led by every rank fight a desperate battle for the port town. A Victoria Cross will be awarded to an Anzac for the victory. The port is retaken, but the navy does not know it, leaving 8,000 on the beaches of Kalamata. The survivors must choose, surrender or escape?30 APRIL 1941 MANI200 Australians and Allies go south on a 30 hour non stop march to escape. With them is Australian private Syd Grant with his folding camera. They fall asleep in a church at Trachila. Local Greeks wake them with news that a destroyer is offshore. Fishermen row them out into the Bay of Messinia. The destroyer's crew demand that the Australians prove who they are, incase they are realy Germans.Private Syd Grant and others start singing “Waltzing Matilda”. The crew of the destroyer believe that they are Aussies. They are rescued by the Navy.After the war, Syd Grant names his soldier's farm “Kalamata" , for his mates who never returned, and the Greeks who helped him escape.
